Materiality 1

This is the first of a series of three pieces exploring materials rather than ideas. High school students were given a wood scrap from a salvaged crate, a shop rag, a piece of chicken wire, rope, twine and a piece of burlap. They were instructed to allow the materials to create an assemblage and to add some sort of embellishment. They were influenced by work and words from Jamey Hart, Wilma Vissers, Tom Duimstra and Kevin Finklea. The artists referenced Richard Tuttle, Charles Harlan, Anna Fasshauer, Judith Scott, Philadelphia Wireman, Blinky Palermo, Suprematism, Neo-Plasticism and Art Concret. I added semiotics to the mix.
